it's...rough going, with how bad his everything hurts. but if there's anything he wants to do— besides get back on the ship, ever feel warm again, and forget all aspirations of a high diving career — it's not make this harder on velveteen than it has to be ]
[ mostly going to bury his face in the back of vel's shirt and bite his lip hard enough to draw blood, but is trying to pay attention for signs of slipping.
that gives him a chance to cough weakly (ow), some last seawater exiting his lungs (ow), and kind of dangle uselessly as the weight of all those slow-unbreaking fractures hits him (owowowowowowowowowowowowow), not to mention the cold.

the shell of his egg shatters when it hits the water, but he isn't instantly obliterated, so that's a success.
