it's...rough going, with how bad his everything hurts. but if there's anything he wants to do— besides get back on the ship, ever feel warm again, and forget all aspirations of a high diving career — it's not make this harder on velveteen than it has to be ]

that gives him a chance to cough weakly (ow), some last seawater exiting his lungs (ow), and kind of dangle uselessly as the weight of all those slow-unbreaking fractures hits him (owowowowowowowowowowowowow), not to mention the cold.
